The first round of the 2017 BDO Inter-Schools Quiz had a rousing start as Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent school took top spot for the northern Durban area at Northlands Girls’ High School on 2 March 2017.
They beat Northwood High School by 87 points to 82 in a fiercely contested battle in which 28 teams from 9 schools took part.
The teams of four were all made up of Grade 10 and 11 learners who were asked a series of general knowledge questions as part of a round robin competition involving four regions, ahead of the grand final round at Clifton School on 2 May 2017.
The overall champions win the chance to nominate a disadvantaged school for a donation of R10 000 worth of books from BDO, Kip McGrath Education Centre and Books & Books.
This is the eighth year that the competition has been organised by the Durban office of international audit, tax and advisory firm, BDO.
Sally Juckes, Audit Partner at BDO said, “The Durban North teams have set a high standard for this year’s quiz. We have been impressed with their knowledge and it is obvious that, whilst they are all taking the competition very seriously and are very well prepared, they are enjoying the social aspect of the event and the friendly atmosphere.”
“We hope that they have grown from the experience, which tests not only their general knowledge but their ability to set their sights higher than their comfort zone and to work as a team under pressure. These are all valuable attributes which will stand them in good stead in the future.”
The schools participating in the northern Durban round were Ashton Ballito, Maris Stella High School, Durban Girls College, Crawford College North Coast; Danville Park Girls High School, Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School, Northwood High School,Crawford College La Lucia, Northlands Girls’ High School.
